Why Are the Indigos Here?

Something new is happening on the earth. An entire cohort of highly sensitive and highly aware individuals has been born during the last century. It is an evolutionary change worth investigating and understanding. This article is an attempt to describe the phenomenon and to attach some meaning to it.
It is, perhaps, more helpful to speak of “Indigo” and “Crystal” energy than of specific individuals with the label of “Indigo.” While all members of this cohort are extraordinarily sensitive and aware, there is a spectrum of ways this sensitivity and awareness is manifested. Therefore, I use the term “Indigo and Crystal energy” to describe the phenomenon, and the word “Indigo” to describe specific individuals who exhibit the highly sensitive and highly aware characteristics.
The words “Indigo” and “Crystal” are symbolic of higher frequencies of energy, and refer to colors at the upper end of the spectrum. Thus, they are apt metaphors for our purposes.
In the history of planet earth, the “Indigo” and “Crystal” energies can be said to be incarnating, that is bringing something that is “other” into something which is already here. Perhaps the reason these energies are incarnating now is to unite the energies of heaven and earth. In the center of this union, we humans BOTH attract from the earth what we need to thrive in the manifested, material reality, AND are united on all levels to the universal ONENESS that is the sole reality. Humans are the bridge. AND THE INDIGO AND CRYSTAL ENERGY IS WHAT BUILDS THE BRIDGE.
This energy is new, just coming into the planet. At the same time it is old, reflective of the numerous times the energies of heaven have incarnated into the energies of earth to bring healing, help, redemption. “Old souls” are coming in. They are showing up in “new bodies,” bodies which are highly sensitive and highly aware of a much more vast spectrum of reality than that of their predecessors.
As the new energies come in, there are significant changes in individual physical, emotional and energy bodies. With each generation, humans are becoming increasingly able to adapt to the changes. Thus we see the phenomenon we call “Indigo” children and young adults, and “Crystal” children. These children and young adults are part of an evolutionary thrust that is attempting to adapt to the new realities.
As with any evolution, this shift is not uniform. Humans in each generation are more or less able to cope with the increase in sensitivity and awareness which they experience, and more or less tuned into that sensitivity and awareness. The highly sensitive and aware in the first evolutionary wave (which includes people from about 40 to old age) confront challenges associated with their difficulties in adaptation:
- Emotionally, there are extreme sensitivities to the thoughts and feelings of others, boundary difficulties, gut-wrenching pain about the plight of the world.
- Physically, the inexperience in running high levels of energy (a byproduct of increased awareness) can manifest in seizures, chronic illnesses, asthma, cancer, heart disease, and other manifestations of blocked energy.
- Socially, many experience loneliness and the agony of not fitting in with their peers.
- Energetically, there may be chronic reversed polarity in the biofield, locked-up chakra magnetism, and a pronounced GAP between the beautiful spiritual and intuitive energies in the upper chakras, and the dense and blocked energies in the lower chakras.
What recent books and articles have labeled the “Indigo children” (many of whom are now young adults) constitutes what might be called a second wave of this energy. Exhibiting similar sensitivities and awarenesses, they are increasingly able to manage these abilities on the human plane. What some call the “Crystal” children (most of whom are still young at the time of this writing) represent an even more adaptable third wave. We can anticipate that more new waves will come in, as the “Indigo” and “Crystal” energies incarnate more fully on the planet.
Along with these evolutionary changes, there is ALWAYS present an ability to "tune in" or "resonate" with the "Cosmic Lattice" or the Collective Unconscious or the "Grid." Imagine that you are at one and the same time tuning in to the frequencies of rage, pain and depression on the earthly plane, and to the frequencies of wisdom, joy and love in the heavens. The higher frequencies are more ephemeral, easier to miss in the massive loudness and density of the lower frequencies. And there seems to be no way to turn off the radio.
Because this is a new evolutionary shift, everything in our beings is not yet in synch with and supportive of the new abilities. There is, however, a strong current of energy in the direction of the needed synchronicity. In the thrust forward, I see the following evolutionary adaptations in each new “wave” of Indigo and Crystal energy:
1. Progressively more clarity and openness in the upper chakras. (Chakras are energy centers described in various ways by cultures the world over. To learn more, read Donna Eden’s Energy Medicine.) The upper chakras are powerful portals to the universal Divine energies. These portals are easier to open than those in the lower chakras -- i.e., less clogged with attunement to dense energies and matter.
2. Progressively less resistance to clearing the fear- and survival-driven blockages in the lower chakras. Once aware of these blocks, Indigos are able to quickly and easily transform the energies through the portals of the chakras. (All chakras are on some level portals to universal, resourceful energies. These portals operate because of RESONANCE. Ideally, the first two chakras resonate with the frequency of the earth, and chakras 5 through 8 resonate with the Divine Oneness. Chakras 3 and 4 are the bridges -- the corollary in the human energy system of the bridge which Indigo and Crystal energies are creating between the heavens and the earth.)
3. Progressive changes in the heart and solar plexus chakra energies. This is the cutting edge. It is in the third and fourth Indigo and Crystal chakras that the bridge between heaven and earth will be built.
All highly sensitive and aware people find it difficult to manage their internal knowingness about the pain and experience of others. This is compounded by the fact that all are tuned in on some level to the Divine realities of love and compassion in the Universe, and thus most find it difficult to merely ignore these awarenesses.
The first wave of Indigos combine this sensitivity with engrained cultural and societal norms about being responsible for and pleasing others. As you can imagine, this creates enormous stress. It is one thing to respond to others’ expressed desires. It is another to respond to feelings, perceptions and experiences which have not even been verbally communicated!
The second wave of Indigos have more developed solar plexus chakras, and an incredibly high value on authenticity. Thus, they tend to be more able than their predecessors to assert their owns needs and march to a different drummer without the stress of guilt and over-responsibility.
The first wave of highly sensitive and highly aware individuals also tend to "play the game" of society and school, putting their incredible intelligence and intuitive abilities to the service of socially-acceptable goals. They generally get good grades and train for careers which society perceives to be useful. In the midst of their successes, however, they experience depression, anxiety and strong internal conflicts. It is as if their solar plexus chakras are still running the old energies, but the shifting energies in the upper and lower chakras are creating dissonance.
The Indigos in the second wave, by contrast, on some level refuse to play. Their immense intelligence and intuitive abilities are clearly not served by the educational and other structures currently on the planet. Their solar plexus chakras are more capable of running the new planetary energies. YET, this creates dissonance with social environment in which they exist.
The UGLY DUCKLING story and the movie Powder speak to this experience. In the ancient fairy tale UGLY DUCKLING, the swan realizes that she was never a duck, and finding the other swans lives happily ever after. This is the image of the balanced solar plexus chakra -- finding its true identity and thereafter living in harmony with the world around it.
In the movie Powder, by contrast, the character Powder never finds a way to be in harmony with his world. He eventually transforms his body (dense matter) into the higher level spiritual energies and is transfigured or "dies." The planet is not ready for what he brings. IN EVERY HIGHLY SENSITIVE AND AWARE PERSON there is the gut-level realization that the planet is not ready for them, and the accompanying desire to transfigure, leave, die, not be, or wish to have not incarnated. Incarnation almost always registers as a trauma. Limiting beliefs abound related to knowing and living out who we are in the realities of life on earth.
It is not only possible but crucial that Indigos find a way to bridge from the world of spirit to the world of matter.
This is where work on the solar plexus - heart bridge becomes imperative. THE HEART CHAKRA IS THE KEY. Donna Eden describes the heart chakra as the center where “the loving energies of the universe flow through in perfect balance to nurture ourselves and others.” The heart is the metaphor for the Indigo-Crystal energy: It will involve a series of “Powders” who transform the world along with themselves, who bring in the higher energies of love into full union with the energies of mother earth.
And who stay. Rather than being martyred -- as was the case with Powder’s cohorts in human history such as Martin Luther King -- they live. The bridge is made up of their living bodies, negative polarity facing upward in magnetic synchronicity with the Divine, and positive polarity facing downward in magnetic resonance with the Earth.
Traditional Chinese Medicine speaks of the chi or life force which energizes and empowers every living being on the earth. This energy runs through pathways or meridians in the human body.
The meridians which flow to and from the acupressure centers on the feet, through the parts of the body governed by the first and second chakras, are related to the elements of Earth, Water and Wood. These run the energy of the planet, the energy of the mother and the earth. At some point they connect to areas governed by the solar plexus, heart, throat and head chakras, though EVERY one of them either begins or ends in the feet (related to the base chakra).
The meridians which flow to and from the acupressure centers on the hands are related to the elements of Fire and Metal and all flow through the areas governed by the heart, throat and head chakras. They terminate or begin in the hands (related to the heart chakra).
Through this meridian system we run the chi of the earth through our bodies. We project it in healing energies through our hands and intentions, always through the conduit of the heart.
Indigos possess immense and beautiful capabilities to run higher frequencies. It is in the heart chakra that these higher frequencies can create a beautiful harmonic resonance with the frequencies of the chi, of the earth. From this loving center, those higher frequencies flow through every aspect of the human physical and energy anatomy, and thus through the chi of the earth. There is then an energetic transference of sympathetic vibrations:
“Perfect sympathy or harmony, between two systems, depends not only on the fundamental frequencies being in coincidence. Coincidence must be achieved at the level of all vibrational components -- including the harmonics and partial harmonics. When this situation occurs, the whole systems function more smoothly, with minimum resistance and discord -- ultimately creating resistance free circuits and systems. These are systems of greatest efficiency and capability.”
This is the new heaven and earth that the Indigo/Crystal energies are designed to bring: resonance, sympathy, harmony between the Divine and the human, creator and mother, the vibrations of heavens and the harmonies of earth.
